I've been saved once by backing up my data on Google Drive.

Unfortunately, this guy was not so lucky.

Yah a nice online backup server is always a good idea when dealing with important work or school stuff. I plan on getting one just for the nonsense I've collected I can't delete.

My 2 biggest losses were a 160GB portable drive for work which we lost everything, and a 120GB datadrive full of movies. Drive wasn't fully dead but couldn't recover any of my movies

Thats really a question for the god particle. I could change computer but then the site may try to hide from me. Then I'd have to rough the server up and smack it around a lil bit till I gots my money.

Wow, you'd think that for such important data (the thesis) he would have back it up several points along the way. I back up far less important data semi-regularly.

it is pretty astounding all his work was on ONE hard drive on his laptop.

when i studied, i had my thesis in particular on a few locations. i also emailed it to me, ie just a word doc but better safe than sorry.

Not so astounding. When I was doing my MSc our minicomputer had a fixed platter with a whopping 5MB capacity and a removable 5MB disk pack. Hard disk drives were fairly new then. I was site tech as well and would conscientiously backup the fixed disk on to a removable platter once a month.

What I didn't know was that copying the directories only copied the directory and not the contents.
Surprise! After our first disk crash I found all the backed up directories were empty. Lost about 18 months of MSc work.

well in this day and age there can be no excuse for academics, students not to back up documents and research (important ones) when usb sticks cost pittance or in many cases are give out as freebies.
