Whats the overall distance and what resolution do you require?

One option would be to count the motor rotation using a small magnetic encoder, like the iC-MA from iC-Haus (http://ichaus.biz/product/iC-MA ). To identify the end position an additional end switch would be needed. The resolution is 6-8bit per rotation and you get forward/backward counts (AB pulses). You may also take a look at this application article: http://ichaus.biz/appnote_magneticsensors .
