Hi all,
i was thinking about joining an organisation in ireland (engineers ireland) for accredited engineers. they require a yearly subscription fee (€220) and have different grades for different education levels and experience levels.
anyone out there a member of something like that? and would you recomend it?

If It not part of a sure job,or you are working and respected in your
type of work.Being part of an accredited group is important if you
have to be invited because of your education and experience.Just
becoming a member because you have the money is not a good reason.
There are accedited groups that only accept the top people in your
field of work. They get work from the state because of there status.
So you must decide how important this is for you,not just to pay dues.
A good test is,you have to go before a oral review committee and pass.

Sounds rather 'scammish' to me as well. Such a group, if truly a respected orginization, would rely on their reputation as outstanding members of their field of expertise, and NOT just want anyone, with a large sum of money, to join.

Order a subscription to a newsletter/magazine in your subject if you just have to spend some dough. :)

lol i wish! could buy 220 lottery tickets and take my chances! my job is fairly secure for a few years and it was more of a planning ahead thing. i figure when this job runs its course, being a member of such an organisation couldnt hurt when going for another.

Does this organization have a website? Are their by-laws posted for all to see? Are there annual elections of the leadership in the organization?

i'm not too sure of the by elections or the finer details, i think the people are selected to lead based on their achievements in the field.
ya thats their site alright.

If you have a good job that pays well and you like to go to conventions
and listen to speakers talk. They will have seminars and thing like that.
The best thing you have is your certificate for engineering placed on
your office wall if you have an office. If you go to all there meeting and
pay your way, they will notice you in about 10 years and make you a chair-
man of some committee.
