I write as a complete novice interested in advancing a project. One of the elements required is a way to detect Deceleration. Iwould ask if an accelerometer can be oriented to sense this. Much thanks in advance as I await an informed response.

Deceleration is just acceleration in a different direction.

Radio Shack sells a really neat ready to use acelerometer for around $30 USD.

Here is a link to the device on there their site.

With a one axis accelerometer oriented such that a positive voltage came from an acceleration, then a negative voltage output would indicate deceleration.

Observation:The RS accelorometer is also a fine tilt sensor, so it seems like it should be kept level during deceleration. The output is an almost 50% duty cycle @ 100Hz signal which varies between 45% & 55%.
