[IMG] Maybe it was old, or maybe it rubbed the slip rings?

Parts manual says #312A58 listed as 1 MFD.
Would this be micro or milli farad?

    hi
I would say from its physical size its a 1 micro-Farad.
Ensure that you get a replacement with at least the marked working AC voltage and X2 rating.

number on it says 300 Ac 400 DC rating.
What does it do? It produces power without it, leaving it out for now would it be ok?
It is on the 120vac output hot side coming off the carbon brush

It tries to filter out the carbon brush noise.
440 volts is what you will usually find in the stores I go to.
