    Glass surge absorbers are used to protect equipment from catastropic electrical transient induced by lighting strike where glass discharge tube used to protect the equipment against against over voltages caused by lighting.

    Ok, then what is the difference between:
    catastropic electrical transient induced by lighting strike
    and
    over voltages caused by lighting

    Life of the device, in terms of events before failure.

    Transients = often, moderate energy

    Nearby strike = rare, huge energy.

    Gas discharge tubes are rated for 10-100 or so 'events' before they die, so it had better be a rare occurrence.
