The point is, you never know... and if you don't look into it, then someone else will...
Just out of curiosity, what do you think about current nuclear fusion research?
I'm just waiting for the payoff that justifies the expense while millions to billions of people suffer for a lack of clean water.

I very much doubt that countries involved in that research are suffering that problem. Except maybe China...
The point was which problem is more vital to the world?
Is this plot really fiction? Upper class society spends billions on curiosities while the lower class dies for lack of simpler solutions.

How many curiosities have you bought today? In fact, if you've spent any of whatever wealth you may have on anything more than utter subsistence, you are guilty on your own terms.
