I want to take a regular stereo and connect to it a battery, so the stereo will work when it connected to a regular power source and when it connected only to the battery. And when it connected to a power source it will recharge the battery.
My questions:
1.Can I connect the battery to the power cables of the stereo and it will charge the battery when it plugged in and use the battery to run the stereo when it doesn't plugged, or it doesn't work that way?
2.How do I prevent the battery from overcharging?

1. If by "regular stereo" you mean one powered from the AC mains, then no, it doesn't work that way. You can't power it from a battery DC source. You could with a car stereo amplifier which is designed to operate from a 12V battery.

2. For proper battery charging you need a charging circuit designed for the particular type and voltage of the battery you are using.
