A little help with a stepper motor project please?!

Thank you for all your replies, my head is starting to ache! Right I'll get this one, do I need to purchase a driver board for it or will this be handled by the AVR? Also which AVR microcontroller do I need to get?!!

If the angle and rotation speed aren't critical you could probably use a simple geared brushed DC motor with 3 cam-operated microswitches at 120° intervals.
Alec_t has it right. Use a wiper or window motor with a normally open microswitch riding on a cam. It will keep the motor running until the roller drops into a notch. A normally open push button switch (door bell) will start the motor again until the microswitch takes over again. It will stop at each notch.
