Like in the attached schematic & simulation.

As bistable, it acts as a Schmitt trigger.

For simplicity, I used 9v for Vcc.

Note that when the input signal crosses the thresholds (1/3 Vcc, 2/3 Vcc) the output toggles states.

Note that the output of a bjt 555 will not actually approach Vcc; it'll be 1.2v to 1.7v lower.
