Hello, I am fairly new to building circuits (last time I've done anything like this is almost 7 years ago). But what I am trying to do is a light turns on when I press a button (the button stays pressed). My problem is the light needs to shut off after 3 to 5 seconds OR when the button is let off.
It just needs to be something simple, Input power is applied, output turns on for 3 to 5 seconds or till input power is no longer applied.

Have you tried using electromechanical timer. Connect the core to your 12vdc supply and use the nomally open contact of the timer to control the light. Set it to 3seconds and it will do all you want
