    I received a brand new GLCD 12864.

Tried to identify the chip/s inside searching for "HY-12864K" with no luck.

In the back there are three black potted ICs named U1 U2 U3.

It has 20 pins and that seems to be all I can say.

What else could I try to identify the chips inside to know how to use it?

Previous owner has no idea what is the name nor the place where it bought it years ago.

See if one of these datasheets matches up with your GLCD.

Scroll down to see the various datasheets.

    Hi,
this appears to be the exact one you are looking for:

    http://www.icbank.com/data/ICBShop/board/HY-12864K-801.PDF

It will almost certainly use an HD44780U or equivalent controller (the same as 90% of small LCDs), have a look at the data for that for the software interface requirements.

While mine was not there I managed to have an idea of the pin distribution.

BTW, A and K terminals are clearly identified. Tried to measure something but to no avail. Is it any chance that mine has EL backlight instead of a LED?

    What test could I perform?
