I am working on a project to create a timer. My idea is to have six LEDs; each LED representing ten seconds, as time passes LEDs light up until all six are lit. Once the timer reaches the 60th second it will reset and start all over.
Question 1: Can this be accomplished with a 555 and a 7490 counter?
Question 2: Are there any guides or anything to help me get this done besides the datasheets?

Not with a 7490, which has a BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) output. A 4017 would do it nicely though.
