When dealing with synchronous counters, remember that your clock pulse must be applied to all of the FFs.
Check out the datasheets for existing 4-bit syncronous counters. They often have functional schematics. You should be able to work out a one stage extension. That is assuming that your design skills are superior to your sloppy written communications. I find they most often go hand in hand.
