Decibel sensor sources?

A decibel is just a standard logarithmic representation of ratios, such as power gain. What are you trying to measure with the sensor?

It's probably sound pressure level (but you knew that).

For some reason, most people just don't 'get' dBs.

Even the usually excellent BBC omitted to mention the reference point when talking about SPLs on one of it's pop-science programmes a few weeks back...
