Dividing a 16 bit number

I need to make a divider to divide a 16 bit number by 8 or 16 (only one of the 2 possibilities, I shall make choose 8 if the divider is Much much simpler for this case). The output can be a decimal too right? How does the divider work than? Any suggestions?

Think shift register.

Think microcontroller and c. Why not the arduino. ( if we knew why you were doing this you might get a better answer. Hardware for the arduino is about 20 bucks us + some infra structure )

Shifting is the first thing, as already suggested, that comes to mind. But do you know (sorry for this) what that is at all?
