Question WHAT!? Flyback transformer creating air waves?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGsKydggdwI

At first i was thinking, laptop to pre-amp/amp then output that into a flyback then i was looking for another flyback to lower the voltage again and play it back through the speakers..... to produce the music..

As i carried on watching i noticed there are no speakers... then i noticed he said the arc is CAUSING the soundwaves to be formed... My mind melted....

Interesting, they have a link...

Be very careful with something like this, it is lethal.

It is a form of PWM, one of the projects I'll eventually get around to covering (no high voltage involved).

Plasma can do quite bit, flames are a form of plasma, and can also be modulated to produce sound.

That blew my mind. I have never even considered it. Plasma is very interesting stuff.

You could market it and call it a FlyPod.

This is nothing absolutely new, although the effort to create something like this is meritorious. Plasma tweeters are being researched for years, since the 80's. They have the advantage of reproducing very high frequencies ant they can reproduce lower frequencies than other types of tweeters. However, they need high voltage in order to work, and their electronics are complex.

Today, plasma tweeters...Tomorrow, plasma shielded warp-drives!
