are there any other #s on the device? or, can you give the driver #?

i.e. does it use a 44780 chip on the board?

it uses the HD44780 driver. here is the sheet for the driver:
http://www.datasheetarchive.com/pdf-...DSA-250040.pdf

and a good resource for the display:
http://www.sxlist.com/TECHREF/io/lcd/44780.htm

it includes code and info for PIC and AMTEL chips.

I am 95% sure that is the sheet you want. The HD44780 is a HITEC driver. And the LCD HMC16229SG-LY-12 uses this driver.

If I confused you by saying the the code was for PIC or AMTEL chips, I was referring to the processor you will use for sending information to the LCD.

PIC are the 12fxxx, 16fxxx, and others of that style numbering...
Amtel makes the ATMEGA and such. The Arduino uses the AMTEL chips.
