I use Avira on all the windows laptops in my house. Its light and does the job. My personal PC and eeepc run Linux so I don't have anything to worry about. But I maintain an alert overview because one day some smart arse will do something nasty!

regards

Fenris

AFAIK, Avast, AVG, and Avira are great choices. But I would vote Avast cause it is easy to use, and does not have conflict with my other applications.

I run the free version of Avast and the free version of Zone Alarm firewall. I also do weekly scans with malwarebytes.com (also free). I have a headcold today, but my computer never gets sick. What I like about Avast, besides the fact that it is the most effective anti-virus program I have ever used, is that you just install it, configure it for automatic updates, then forget it. It works seamlessly without bogging your system down as the other programs do. IMHO anyway.

Avast Home Edition, Spyware Doctor, and Windows Defender works fine for me...

I love Avira AnitVir because it makes system bleeps and popups when you get a virus, even when the file or whatever has not been activated.

For example i downloaded a file that had the file, the virus detector is so good that the moment the file was downloaded into the temp folder it found it and asked me what to do!!!

The reocmmendations for all the free AVs are provided in this thread and any new recommendations are either off-topic or repeating what has already been said, therefore I will now close this thread. If anyone has a specific questions they wish to ask please start a new thread. Thanks.
