Replacing LM3909 with 555 timer

Hi ,i'm requesting if i can be guided.
Since the lm3909 from the datasheet pages is an oscillator /LED flasher i think it can be replaced with 555 timer which still can be used as an oscillator and timer, is it true?If yes how can this cct be replaced with a 555 as in the attached schematic? PLS help

The thing about the LM3909 was the battery voltage and life. It ran a LED for about 2 years off a D Cell (1½V). A CMOS LED such as the ICM7555 IC is a very good drop in replacement for a 555 that uses 3V. A narrow pulse width on duty cycle should do the same thing.
